Introduction & Problem Identification:

Topic - Workplace Policies and Discrimination

The Sandtrap , a local Beachside restaurant has introduced a new dress code that requires waitresses to wear revealing attire to attract new customers during off-season, while this strategy attracted more customers and increased revenue but it also resulted harassment from male customers towards the waitresses like Lucy.

Lucy is a college student who started working there part-time, due to the abusive comments from male customers to Lucy she felt uncomfortable in the dress code and she expressed her concerns to her Manager Don. Now, Don is stuck between keeping the new dress code as of to attract new customers and to address Lucy's complaints.


Decision Criteria:

  •  The physical and mental stability of the employees and their safety. This part has the highest weightage as employees safety is the utmost responsibility of the workplace
  • The strategy of increasing sales by the new dress code. This part is also the high weightage part as sales is really important for our business to be successful.
  • Taking care of customer preferences with maintaining staff safety.


Generate and Evaluate Alternatives:

Maintaining the Dress Code: Continuing to keep the revealing dress code to attract customers This will attract new customers and boost sales it also has disadvantage that is risk to employee safety and well-being.

Going back to the previous Dress Code: Allowing waitresses to return to the previous dress code. This will address employee's safety and well-being and reduce the risk of harassment whereas the sales can be start reducing as before.

Modify the Dress Code: Introducing a modified dress code that will address employee's concern and maintain professionalism. This will address both employees concerns and customers satisfaction but this will still have a little potential to lead to harassment or customer dissatisfaction.


Selecting the best alternative

The best alternative is to modify the dress code , this alternative both prioritize the necessity of customers and to address and respect the employees. The Sandtrap can achieve its business goals while also promoting respectful and safe workplace, by modifying the Dress code which speaks professionalism while reducing the risk of harassment for the employees.
